The Conservation and Sustainable Use of Mountains and Mountain Ranges (CoSMoS, Spanish acronym) project arises from the positive experience of the Sustainable Financing for New Protected Areas (FINANP, Spanish acronym). With financing from KfW Development Bank, and hand in hand with National Commission of Protected Areas (CONANP, Spanish acronym) and National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO, Spanish acronym), CoSMoS will promote the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial mountain ecosystems in central Mexico. Inspired by Cosmos, the work of Prussian explorer and scientist Alexander von Humboldt, the project will strengthen the sustainable management of 18 protected areas (PAs) and their areas of influence, as well as the capacities of communities and their local economies. CoSMoS financing was approved in 2022 and will begin operation in 2023.
